There are two stages to the application process to the Mathematics teacher Training Scholarships; the initial application and Assessment Centre.
The initial application consists of completing the online application form, which can be found by clicking on the big pink button that says ‘Apply now’ on the home page (you’d be surprised how many people miss it…)
Your completed application form allows us to assess that you:
• Meet the education requirements
• Are classed as a home student
• Meet the criteria required to become a Maths Scholar
We assess your degree subject and classification, and response to the residency question for your suitability for the first two points listed above. If it is not obvious to us from your answers to these questions, then we will contact you for more information to help us make a decision.
Please note - due to limited resources, we only assess this information as part of your application. Please do not send this information to us for assessment separately.
Your personal statement allows us to judge if you meet the criteria required to become a Maths Scholar. The majority of applications rejected at the initial application stage for the past two years were due to having an inadequate personal statement. This is why it is crucial that you put the time and effort into this part of the application, and focus on providing the information that will help us to make this judgement. Ensure that you have read carefully the introductory text to this part of the application.
We recommend you read the ‘How to submit a successful application’ and ‘Writing a Successful Personal Statement’ articles before submitting your application.
Please be aware that the online application system does not have the facility to save part completed application forms. To help you prepare your application, download the
Sample Application Form.pdf
Should you require the application in an alternative format, or experience any issues completing the online form, please email us for further assistance at firstname.lastname@example.org
Once you have submitted your application, you will see a confirmation message to inform you that it has been successfully submitted and that the Scholarships Team will be in contact within 10 working days (not including weekends or bank holidays). You will not receive an email confirmation.
If you are successful at the initial application, you will be invited to the second selection stage; the Assessment Centre. The Assessment Centre comprises of the following three activities, which allow us to asses if you have the qualities that we are looking for:
• Group Presentation; your ability to makes maths an engaging topic to learn
• Discussion Group; your communication skills focusing on participation and interaction with others, and an,
• Interview; your Personal qualities, motivation and enthusiasm to be a Maths Scholar and inspirational maths teacher.
If you are undertaking a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course then you may be required to also sit the written examination, which is deigned to assess your mathematical knowledge, thinking and problem solving abilities. You will only be asked to sit the written examination if your degree subject does not contain significant mathematical content to meet the education requirements of the Maths Scholarships on its own.
This is only a brief overview of the Assessment Centre. An invitation to the Assessment Centre will:
• Advise you if you are required to sit the written Maths test.
• Advise you what Maths topic to base your presentation on
• Provide a briefing paper with more information about the activities of the Assessment Centre.
To help you to prepare, the briefing paper for the Assessment Centre provides questions you will be asked in the interview, the topic of discussion for the Discussion Group, and if applicable, what Maths topics to focus revising on for the maths test.
We have produced articles about the Assessment Centre to help you prepare. There isn’t much else we can do, other than going through the application process for you, but if you do have any questions please e-mail the Scholarships Team at email@example.com.
Hopefully, it won’t be too long until we’re reviewing your applications but remember not to leave it too late to apply, you might just miss out!
