Assisting in maths lessons allowed me to observe a range of teachers, their methods, and behaviour management strategies, as well as how they adapted their styles depending on what class they were teaching.

I wanted to feel as though coming into work truly helped impact a person’s life. So, I had a choice. I could just keep climbing the career ladder always thinking what if? or I could do something about it.

Aged 45, after a successful career in cryptographic software development, I decided it was time for a new challenge.

I hope that, in future, praising students more effectively will help to bolster these relationships and aid both my lessons and the subject of maths as a whole to become more valuable and inspirational to my students.

I have found the career change extremely refreshing and rewarding. What I say to all career changers out there is not to be put off applying to teacher training whatever age you are. As long as you are passionate about mathematics, any skills applied through previous work or life will provide transferable skills.
