Maths Scholars Welcome Webinar 2022

The Maths Scholars Welcome Webinar is taking place virtually on Saturday 17 September 2022. Three great workshops include 'Developing positive classroom culture in mathematics', presented by Ed Southall, NRICH with Dr. Ems Lord, followed by Trigonometry the Right (Angled) Way, presented by Aidan Gollaglee.

Developing positive classroom culture in mathematics - Ed Southall

About the Workshop

This session will highlight and explore the importance of a positive classroom culture in mathematics, and how this in turn will enable many of the most important and effective strategies in mathematics teaching to flourish. We will explore teaching strategies and activity ideas to help draw out low stakes discussions around mathematics, and we'll discuss ways in which we can build tasks to help build motivation and success for students.

About the Speaker

Ed Southall is the maths curriculum designer for Oak National Academy, and maths specialist for the secondary PGCE at the University of Huddersfield. He has worked in education as a lead teacher, head of department, senior leader, and advisor for 17 years in both primary and secondary schools at home and abroad in the Middle East. He is the author of 4 mathematics books including the bestselling pedagogy subject knowledge book “Yes, But Why? Teaching for Understanding in Mathematics”, and most recently, “Geometry Juniors” for 8-12-year olds. Ed is also editor in chief of the Mathematical Association and a popular presence on twitter amongst mathematics teachers and enthusiasts across the globe. He tweets as @edsouthall.

NRICH - Dr Ems Lord

About the Workshop

In this session, Director of NRICH Dr Ems Lord will lead Scholars through ways to  maximise the potential of NRICH's rich mathematical resources in their classrooms. Ems will guide Scholars though the theory which underpins the development of NRICH resources, illustrating key ideas through a selection of highly engaging, hands-on activities. During the session, Scholars will explore secondary and post-16 resources (including preparation materials for university entrance tests), NRICH's Live Problems plus forthcoming free events for Scholars and their classes.

About the Speaker

Ems joined the team as NRICH Director in 2015, following her previous role leading one of the country's largest Mathematics Specialist Teacher Programmes. She is a Research Fellow at Clare Hall at the University of Cambridge, a Founding Fellow of the Chartered College of Teachers, a regular contributor to the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Teaching Profession and a past-President of the Mathematical Association. Ems has taught mathematics across the key stages, from Early Years to A Level Further Mathematics and university entrance tests. Her previous roles include supporting schools as a Leading Mathematics Teacher, local authority consultant and as a Chartered Mathematics Teacher. Ems lectures about problem-solving and gender issues on undergraduate, PGCE and Masters programmes and regularly contributes towards academic books, journals and conferences.

Trigonometry the Right (Angled) Way - Aidan Gollaglee

About the Workshop

This workshop will take you on a trip down memory lane of how trigonometry may have  first been introduced to you before putting aside the dreaded SOH CAH TOA mnemonic and exploring alternative ways of getting students into trigonometry. Participants will take a look at the language and terminology used within trigonometry as well as considering how we can use visual representations to support our teaching. Calculators will take a back seat for much of this workshop so participants can get a feel for trigonometry without a calculator. The aim of this workshop is to help participants to formulate ideas for their own teaching and to enjoy trigonometry lessons through the eyes of a teenager again.

Equipment required: A pair of compasses, pencil, ruler and a calculator.

About the Speaker

Aidan completed his mathematics degree at Loughborough University and went on to work in the aerospace industry before training to teach at King’s College London. Aidan was part of the 3rd cohort of Maths Scholars and benefitted from the network and events offered. He is currently Maths Hub Lead for London South East Plus and has previously worked in multiple schools across London as a Head of Department and Lead Practitioner.

Aidan’s own experience of maths education in a rural coastal town in Norfolk inspired him to want to make change and now focusses on supporting and delivering PD to teachers with the aim of creating a better experience of mathematics education for both students and teachers. He is an accredited NCETM PD lead and is currently working on supporting and coaching subject leaders for maths to support them in implementing a teaching for mastery approach to maths education.
