Maths Scholars Celebration Event 2025
We are welcoming our new cohort of Scholars 2025/26 to join us at The Studio in Birmingham for a number of celebratory CPD sessions!
Saturday 20th September 2025
Session 1 - How to develop a convincing argument using paper folding - with Steve Lyon (Independent Education Consultant - Assistant Maths Hub Lead, Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub)
About the Session
A hands-on session using paper folding as a way to develop students’ ability to produce a convincing argument. In this session you will explore the secrets hidden in A4 paper, produce a convincing argument that isosceles triangle is an isosceles triangle and prove that an equilateral triangle is an equilateral triangle, all leading to developing a proof without words.
About the Speaker

Steve Lyon has taught mathematics for a long time, most of this time in secondary
schools. After spells as a head of department and an advanced skills teacher, Steve moved into teacher support, designing and delivering CPD as Mathematics Lead at the National STEM Learning Centre in York. Steve now works as an Independent Consultant, working with a range of organisations. For many years Steve has been the Assistant Maths Hub Lead (post 16) for the Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub.

Session 2 - Symmetry in Art: Exploring Mathematics in traditional Chinese paper cutting - with Wanyun Vanessa Beaumont (Assistant Maths Hub Lead (Yorkshire and Humber Maths Hub) ECT/ITT Lead
About the Session
In this interactive workshop, we will explore the mathematical beauty of symmetry through the traditional art of Chinese paper cutting. Participants will investigate key mathematical concepts such as reflection, rotational symmetry, and the significance of the circle while engaging in hands-on paper-cutting activities. By creating their own intricate designs, they will gain a deeper understanding of how symmetry operates in both mathematics and art. No prior artistic experience is required—just a willingness to explore patterns, precision, and creativity in a fun and engaging way!
Please bring a pair of scissors with you.

She is incredibly passionate about Teaching for Mastery. Her goal is to develop and foster determination and resilience in maths and make a real difference to the next generation. Her drive is to provide opportunities for students to access high quality education, this will develop their relational understanding over rote-procedural memorisation in maths learning.
In addition to the work she does for Maths Hubs, she is also an ECT Induction Lead and ITE Lead supporting Early Career Teachers and trainee teachers for several years. She believes that the high-quality professional development that improves teachers’ knowledge, practice and confidence can have a huge impact on pupils’ outcomes.

Session 3 - Fun with double sided counters - with Christine Watson (University of Worcester ITT lecturer)
About the Session
We will explore how these versatile counters can be used for symmetry, sequences, fractions and ratio, representing data, solving equations and more…
You will have hands-on experience of using this manipulative so bring a (phone) camera so you can record what you do. We will even give you a few to take away to practise with!
About the Speaker

Christine taught in secondary schools for 30 years but has also worked with local authorities, exam boards, mathematics associations, maths hubs and assessment developers. She now works in ITT at University of Worcester and delivers professional development for AMSP alongside other projects.
