Encouraging Participation In Maths Beyond GCSE

We are welcoming our wonderful Scholars and Alumni to join us for a CPD webinar!

Saturday the 2nd of December 2023

Session: Encouraging Participation In Maths Beyond GCSE - with Rachel Beddoes (MEI

About the Session

By looking at the factors that influence a student to take maths beyond GCSE and considering the barriers that they can face we will think about and discover ways you can support students in your classroom to see that level 3 maths could be for them!  In particular, we will focus on how gender interacts with those factors as we know that less girls choose A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics than boys.  Bring your own experience, an open mind and plenty of questions to this informative but interactive webinar.  If you want to get a head start then you can check out Encouraging girls' participation in advanced maths research, strategies and resources!

About the Speaker

Rachel taught maths for 20 years and for the last five years in school she was also a STEM Coordinator. In 2018 she joined MEI to lead the girls’ participation work of the DfE funded Advanced Maths Support Programme. Since July 2022 Rachel has been MEI’s lead for Stakeholder Engagement and Careers. This work involves her collaborating with employers and other organisations to develop students’ understanding of the utility of maths, usually through the development of innovative student resources and the delivery of engaging enrichment events. Rachel also delivers professional development relating to girls’ participation in level 3 maths and linking the maths curriculum to careers (in order to help schools achieve the Gatsby Benchmarks). Rachel is passionate about making students (and teachers and parents) aware of the importance of studying maths after GCSEs and the vast and varied careers that doing so can lead to.
