Maths Scholars Celebration Event 2024
We are welcoming our new cohort of Scholars 2024/25 to join us at The Studio in Birmingham for a number of celebratory CPD sessions!

Session 1 - Finding Inspiration For Your Mathematics Lessons In Science - with Stephen Lyon (Independent Maths Consultant)
About the Session
As a maths teacher I was often berated by teachers of science as to why students can’t do maths in science lessons. This led me to explore just what maths students are expected to do in science. In this session we will look how the maths students encounter in science can provide inspiration for our maths lessons making the content relevant to students and, hopefully, better prepared for when they encounter maths in science. We will try out some activities and consider where we can get further inspiration.
About the Speaker
I have taught mathematics for over 25 years in a range of secondary schools, many of these tears as a head of department and an advanced skills teacher. I then became mathematics lead at the National STEM Learning Centre in York where, as well as developing, writing and delivering CPD for mathematics teachers a lot of my work was with teachers of science supporting the delivery of the mathematics content in their curricula. The greatest fun is trying to get maths teachers and science teachers to work together! I have now left STEM Learning and work as an independent maths consultant and am Assistant Maths Hub Lead - post 16 for Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub. For many years I have been associated with the Maths Scholars programme having served on the management group, delivered CPD sessions and act as an assessor.

Session 2 - Maths In Context - with Christine Watson (Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP) Area Coordinator)
About the Session
In the assessment you answered, 'why am I learning this'. But do you have ideas for lots of maths topics? In this workshop you will try out some activities where maths is linked to other subjects, to the news, to careers and to real life. You will get a link to the resources and to a bank of great resources to take this further.
About the Speaker
Christine taught in secondary schools for 30 years but has also worked with local authorities, exam boards, mathematics associations, maths hubs and assessment developers. She now works in initial teacher training at University of Worcester, with local Maths Hubs as well as the AMSP role.

Session 3 - Representation Matters - with Aidan Gollaglee (Maths Hub Lead, London South East Plus Hub)
About the Session
When teaching key ideas, it is necessary to put thought into how we use different representations in mathematics to develop fluency. This workshop will explore common representations used from KS1 and KS2 to help teachers to consider student’s prior experiences. There will be a vast array of ideas to help with your lesson planning.
About the Speaker
Aidan completed a Maths degree at Loughborough University before working in the aerospace industry. Aidan then trained as a secondary maths teacher at King's College London and went on to work as a Head of Department in South East London. Whilst in that role Aidan completed his NCETM PD Lead training before eventually becoming Maths Hub Lead for London South East Plus based at Redriff Primary School focussing on improving maths teaching in primary, secondary and post-16 schools. Alongside this Aidan also works as Strategic Maths Lead for City of London Academies Trust.
