If you are looking for new ideas and approaches to help your SEND pupils then the Mathematical Association is home to “Equals Online”, a fantastic collection of information and resources including an online journal, podcast and in person conference. It can be really bewildering looking for advice on helping SEND pupils in the maths classroom, as you want to ensure that the information is from a trustworthy source. It is really reassuring to have the Equals SEND maths advice which is hosted by a Professional subject Association, as it helps to know that the ideas are backed up by evidence and from a reputable source.

Equals – A resource for everyone

What is unique about Equals is that it covers both Primary and Secondary and also Mainstream and Special Schools. The wide range of experiences contained with the Equals community is a great strength, as there can be overlap between the needs of these different groups of teachers and pupils.

The Equals Online Journal

The Equals Online Journal is freely available to read online, and it is issued three times per year.

“The magazine provides a platform for educators and professionals to share their expertise and experiences in teaching maths to students with SEN, promoting access for all learners, and offering valuable insights and resources for inclusive mathematics education.” – Equals Online Journal

Excitingly, there is also an Equals Online Journal Archive which contains over 50 past issues. This is a fantastic resource which contains years of experience in SEND. All of this material is completely free to access.

Equals Conference

Two years ago, an annual one day Equals Conference was established. Every maths department will benefit from sending a representative to the Equals Conference as it is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about inclusive maths education.  This year’s conference has an exciting line up of speakers covering topics such as dyscalculia and exam access, as well as excellent opportunities to network with other teachers and professionals.

Help from the Equals Online Editorial Team

What is really great about Equals Online, is that you can actually contact the Editorial Team for specific advice around helping SEND pupils in your maths classroom. You might have a particular SEND pupil who you want to help more effectively, and the Equals Team will endeavour to give you impartial professional advice regarding your situation. If they don’t have the expertise within their immediate team, they will help to put you in touch with someone who might be able to help. A lot of training and resources around SEND pupils are often not subject specific, whereas the Equals Online resources are 100% focused on maths.

Get Involved with Equals

Equals Online is very much a community of people and relies on the expertise of teachers and researchers who work with SEND pupils. In the future you might consider writing an article for the Equals magazine or becoming a member of their editorial team. If you want to write an article, then a wide range of themes and styles are accepted - if you think your idea will be useful to the wider teaching community then run it past the Equals team and they will be happy to discuss it with you.
