Maths Scholarships CPD Workshop June 2022
Saturday 11 June 2022
We are delighted to announce we have a new CPD opportunity coming up this June, with three separate CPD workshops.
Workshop #1 - Driving is a risky business! - Dr Laura Bonnett
About The Event
A ‘one-size fits all’ approach is often given to those living with epilepsy, but armed with statistics, Laura Bonnett sought to change this. By investigating the risk of epileptic seizures based on a person’s characteristics, she influenced the DVLA to reduce their epilepsy driving restrictions. Here, she explores ‘risk’ and shares her experience of the life-changing applications statistics have had in epilepsy research.
About the Speaker
Dr Laura Bonnett
Dr Laura Bonnett is a Medical Statistician primarily interested in the development and validation of prediction models for people with recurrent conditions such as epilepsy and asthma. She is based in the Department of Health Data Science at the University of Liverpool. Laura’s work has informed the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency’s regulations on time off driving for people with a first ever seizure, and driving during and after antiepileptic drug withdrawal. This work has now also underpinned European Union policy on driving. Additionally, Laura is a member of the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) Teaching Statistics Special Interest Group and a committed STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Ambassador. As part of these roles Laura develops statistical outreach activities which can be used by anyone with an interest in the area at a variety of events such as careers fairs, science festivals and in STEM clubs at the RSS. Laura is the RSS’s William Guy Lecturer for 2020-2022.

Workshop #2 - An example of a Teaching for Mastery lesson for KS3; Starter, Diagnostic, Anchor Task and Guided Practice - Simon Mazumder
About The Event
In this session we will explore the following areas:
• What is teaching for mastery?
• Mixed attainment lesson.
• Heuristics and holistic methods for teaching and planning.
• Facilitation rather than modelling mathematical procedure.
• What are the lesson objectives?
• What are the learning outcomes?
• Conceptual and procedural understanding.
• Building students resilience.
About the Speaker
Simon Mazumder
Simon is an experienced teacher and is currently a Maths Hub Lead (NW1), an accredited National Mathematics Lead in Education and a PGCE tutor at the University of Manchester.
As a Specialist Leader of Education (SLE) Simon has worked successfully on a number of National Collaborative Projects, including the highly acclaimed Multiplicative Reasoning and Lesson Study. Simon is particularly interested in deepening mathematical knowledge through problem solving. Simon has been recognised for his outstanding contribution as an SLE by the Minister of Education. He has successfully carried out a number of School improvement projects taking schools from special measures to outstanding in both primary and secondary phases.
Simon is acknowledged as having expertise in developing problem solving in mathematics particularly in the recent developments of: The new primary curriculum, the new maths GCSE specification and the newly revised A level. Simon has been developing schemes to help develop the delivery of GCSE re-sits in FE colleges. With non-differentiated learning and developing Teaching for Maths Mastery a key focus of his current work. Simon has delivered workshops at both the MA and BCME conferences and also facilitates workshops for The Princes Trust Teaching Institute.

Workshop #3 - Professor Nira Chamberlain - The Mathematics of an AI Basketball Player
About The Event
Mathematics is used to test and support Real World Artificial Intelligence Decision making systems. However, in this workshop, will your maths be good enough to support an AI Basketball Player?
In this Apprentice Style workshop, the delegates will be split into several teams to investigate the operation and reliability of an AI Basketball Player. The teams will then have to present their findings to the “mean” mathematician, and all but one of the teams will be fired!
Professor Nira Chamberlain
Professor Nira Chamberlain OBE PhD HonDSc is one of the UK’s leading professional mathematicians and was the President of the Institute of Mathematics and its Application (2020-21).
Nira has two mathematical doctorates and is also listed by the PowerList Top 100 Most Influential Black Person in the UK for five years running (2018-2022). In 2018, Nira was the Winner of the Big Internet Math Off title – World’s Most Interesting Mathematician, which was an invited international mathematical communication tournament and voted for by the general public.
Nira, has over 25 years of experience at writing mathematical models/simulation algorithms that solve complex industrial problems. Nira Chamberlain developed mathematical solutions within industries such as the defence, aerospace, automotive and energy sectors. This has included periods in France, the Netherlands, Germany and Israel. During his career Nira has been an invited to speak at several prestigious events such as the New Scientist’s Live, The Royal Society -Destination STEMM, Oxford University – Reddick Lecture, and at King College London – The Maxwell Lecture to name a few. Popular talks include; “Saving Aston Villa”, “The Black Heroes of Mathematics” and finally, “The Mathematics that can stop an AI apocalypse!”
