What Have Been The Highlights Of Your Initial Teacher Training Course? By Thekla Lambri

Undertaking an initial teacher training (ITT) course has been a pivotal and transformative experience that has thoroughly prepared me for a career in education while profoundly enriching my personal development and shaping my perception of teaching as a vital and dynamic profession.

A primary aspect of my ITT course, the practical teaching experiences during placements, proved to be invaluable. The ITT course provided me with the opportunity to engage in hands-on teaching experiences in diverse educational settings, which helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. These placements were instrumental in developing my classroom management skills, lesson planning abilities, and adaptability. Observing experienced teachers and receiving constructive feedback on my teaching methods allowed me to refine my approach and build confidence in my ability to handle different classroom situations.

A critical takeaway from my training is the importance of dedication, passion for teaching, and the patience required to foster trust and build positive relationships with students. The effort invested in overcoming initial resistance and earning students' approval can transform the classroom atmosphere, making lessons more enjoyable and effective, thus enhancing the learning experience.

Another significant highlight of the ITT course was the comprehensive curriculum that covered a wide range of educational theories and practices. Modules on pedagogy, child psychology, and educational philosophy offered deep insights into the ways children learn and develop. This theoretical grounding is crucial for understanding the rationale behind various teaching strategies and for making informed decisions in the classroom. Additionally, specialized training in areas such as special educational needs, inclusion, and using technology in education broadened my perspective and equipped me with the skills to cater to diverse student needs.

Peer collaboration during the course also stood out as a key component of my learning experience. Working closely with fellow trainee teachers created a supportive learning environment where we could share ideas, challenges, and successes. This collaborative atmosphere fostered a sense of community and mutual growth, allowing us to learn from each other's experiences and viewpoints. Group projects and peer-teaching sessions were particularly beneficial, as they encouraged active engagement and critical thinking about educational practices.

During my second school placement, the importance of collaboration with colleagues became evident, particularly when co-teaching. Sharing resources and insights significantly enriched my teaching practice. Moreover, the entire PGCE year allowed me to experience the joys and challenges of teaching, enabling me to explore various approaches to student engagement and relationship building, which initially seemed daunting. Recognizing the uniqueness of each student and their learning styles is fundamental in creating an inclusive and differentiated classroom environment.

Reflective practice, emphasized throughout the ITT course, has become a cornerstone of my professional development. Regularly reflecting on my teaching experiences and learning outcomes has taught me the importance of self-evaluation and continuous improvement. This reflective approach has not only helped me understand what works well in my teaching but has also prompted me to constantly seek new ways to enhance my teaching effectiveness and student engagement.

Lastly, the mentorship component of the ITT course was highly influential. Having experienced mentors who provided guidance, support, and insights into the teaching profession was incredibly beneficial. These mentors served as role models and provided a realistic glimpse into the challenges and rewards of a teaching career. Their advice on everything from classroom management to career development was invaluable and has left a lasting impact on my professional outlook.

In conclusion, the initial teacher training course has been a pivotal step in my journey to becoming a teacher. The practical experiences, comprehensive curriculum, collaborative learning, emphasis on reflective practice, and mentorship have all been integral to my development. These elements have not only equipped me with essential teaching skills but have also fired a passion for continual learning and improvement in the field of education. As I move forward in my teaching career, I carry with me the insights and experiences from this course, confident in my ability to make a positive impact on my students' lives.
