How Do You Envisage The Maths Scholarship Supporting You Through Your Initial Teacher Training? By Benjamin Green

After more than three weeks of university lectures and seminars, as of October, I have finally begun the first placement of my Initial Teacher Training course and I feel that my transition from student to professional is well and truly underway.

As a trainee teacher, we are often told to be ‘reflective-practitioners’ as all our past experience guides the changes we make going forward; however, I think I speak for us all when I say that the first few days of school-life has certainly added the title of ‘forward-thinkers’ to our repertoire.

The resulting excitement and nervousness have made me consider more deeply what the following eight months will hold and how being a Maths Scholar will support the journey that is to come.

First and foremost, is the plethora of resources that have become easily accessible to us Maths Scholars. These fantastic websites have opened the door to a large number of activities, ideas and tips that will allow us as teachers to go above and beyond when planning our lessons.

Not only this, but there are plenty of resources by which I can improve my own subject, curriculum and pedagogical knowledge which give me even more of an opportunity to become the Maths Teacher than my future students deserve.

In addition to this, being a Maths Scholar means that I am part of a huge support network of other trainee Maths Teachers. We all know the value and importance of asking others for help, so I imagine that directing questions or concerns that will surely arise at likeminded people who not only have the same passion as me but may also have also once had the same issues means the support is tailored to us all. It gives us that feeling of belonging to a larger community.

And finally, the Maths Scholarship gives me the recognition I believe I deserve going forward not only throughout my Initial Teacher Training but also in my future career. The title of ‘Maths Scholar’ instils confidence in my university and school mentors and shows anyone who looks at my CV just how dedicated I am to changing the perception of maths that a lot of young people and adults still hold.

Overall, these three factors (the resources, the community and the recognition) are the main ways in which I envisage the Maths Scholarship supporting me through my Initial Teacher Training. It has given me the confidence that I am on the career path that is best suited to me and has given me the best possible start to what I hope will be a very fruitful and rewarding career as a Mathematics Teacher.
