As A Career Changer, How Do You Plan To Bring Your Previous Work Experience Into The Classroom? By Maths Scholar 2023/24

Having moved from the Engineering industry to the world of teaching there is a lot of experience I would like to bring into the classroom. Personally, studying Mathematics and having a very inspiring teacher at A level influenced my decision to pursue a career in a Mathematics related field. I would love to bring this enthusiasm into my classroom and inspire the students to use their knowledge to pursue careers in Mathematics. My passion for the subject and the opportunities it has created for me, is something I would love to showcase in my classroom.

By showing the students the Engineering world and amazing opportunities it has created, for the nation, I hope to open the doors for networking opportunities and career prospects for many. My previous experience in Mentoring during my career will also allow me to support students from various backgrounds achieve beyond the curriculum. Networking in the industry has allowed me to converse with inspirational individuals from a range of backgrounds showcasing exceptional talent. This has allowed me to learn from different people and embrace inclusivity as well as diversity. This experience of creating an inclusive and diverse culture is something I would bring into my classroom. Students must recognise the importance of inclusivity to ensure learning can occur in a safe environment for everyone, as well as appreciate diversity and the talent it brings. I hope to use my Engineering network to help students build connections with professionals in industry and take inspiration. Additionally, I hope to show students the importance of using their initiative, the wider opportunities beyond the curriculum, and practical applications to the learning.

My experience working in industry has shown me the importance of building relationships and this is something I would bring into my classroom. Having students learn the importance of collaborative work and partaking in stimulating projects is key for me to create the classroom culture of learning.

Having worked with various stakeholders at Rolls Royce I would bring my experience of stakeholder needs and prioritisation to ensure the needs of the young people are met within the classroom. Finally, a key skill I would bring across is the importance of communication. Clear instructions to students, communication of achievements and improvements and regular feedback to guardians will create an environment of learning filled with support for the students.
