My Wish To Make A Ripple - By Ann Anthraper

Teaching runs in my blood. My mother was a Professor of History, weaving stories out of the most dull factoids pulling you back through the ages. Very early on this brought on the understanding that a teacher can change the student's perspective of a subject.

As I headed into secondary school, I started struggling with Mathematics and the touted methodology was to learn concepts by rote. This really didn’t sit well with me and I soon developed a distaste for the subject. On the verge of giving up, my academic life took a turn with the arrival of a new Maths teacher. She completely changed the landscape of Maths for me. She encouraged me to develop an understanding of the subject rather than blindly follow steps. This approach along with my mother’s push to challenge myself, helped me develop an interest in Maths.

Two teachers (my Mum and my Maths teacher) made a profound difference in my life. From almost giving up on Maths, I went on to do Engineering and then pursued an MBA in Finance. It is at University that I met my husband. When I look back, it’s astounding to realise how that change in outlook for Maths, changed the trajectory of my life. I realized that one teacher can make a difference.

It is with this aspirational thought that I have ventured into the field of teaching. If I can make a difference for even one child, it is worth it.
